The breed was designed for waterfowl hunting in the 19th century. The temperament of the breed is eager, alert, and self-confident. It is very versatile and can be trained to be service dogs and guides for the blind and handicapped people. These dogs should be kept indoors and be provided with a large fenced yard. They are very intelligent and curious and like to run, dig and play with other animals. The only disadvantage of the breed is that it sheds twice a year.
