Because of unscrupulous breeding practices of this popular breed, you should be very careful of the breeder and dog you select. A good place to start searching would be GR clubs and associations where the breed standard is upheld. Most Goldens are wonderful with kids, especially if they have been regularly exposed to well-behaved children as puppies. Of course being large and excitable, they may knock a child over or whack it with the tail. As with any dog, never leave young children and dogs together unattended.

The main beauty of the breed is its coat. As the name suggests, it may be of any color from light yellow to rich copper. Bright colors in this breed are popular in the USA, while the British prefer traditional colors of medium intensity; and northern countries prefer dogs with light coat colors. The AKC breed standard insists on rich and lustrous coat color, with lighter feathering. The coat should be weather-proof and water-repellent.
