By the middle of the 20th century, clubs of breed fanciers were formed in many countries. The breed owes its origin to the growing demand for perfect hunting dogs. Lord Tweedmouth can be called a founder of the breed. He crossbred several hunting breeds, such as the Tweed Water Spaniel, Irish Setter, Bloodhound, Newfoundland and others.
