Novice owners are recommended to take time to learn about the breed. Attend dog shows and field trials, club meetings, shelters and rescues, and talk with and question experienced owners. Most devoted owners and breeders are proud of their dogs and will gladly help with information or advice.

It is better to buy purebred dogs from reputable breeders only, even if you are not going to show the dog. Reputable kennels produce only high quality animals and aim at improvement of the breed. Such dogs usually have no genetic defects. Buying dogs from pet shops, you run a risk of getting an animal with health and behavior problems. Besides, there is no guarantee that the dog is purebred. Pet shops get their dogs from puppy mills and so-called backyard breeders that produce puppies with the sole purpose of getting money.
