Breeders of Golden Retrievers should be aware of their breed history and should know the standard for the breed. A breed standard is a picture of an ideal dog, which is used to judge the dogs at a show. The aim of any mating should be improvement of the breed. Breeders should know about the health disorders common in the Golden Retriever and test the breeding stock for hereditary disorders.
The Golden Retriever is prone to hip dysplasia and eye problems. These dogs may also suffer from heart conditions and skin allergies. Buyers are advised to contact breeders and ask for OFA and CERF certificates. Golden Retriever puppies should be vaccinated by the time of purchase.
Socialization is also very important for the dogs. Golden Retrievers are generally amiable companions and good working dogs. They enjoy swimming and like to be around their owners day and night. The breed may live indoors on the condition that the dog is provided with sufficient exercise. They do not do well if they are left alone for a long time.
Buyers should make sure the puppies are neither shy, nor dominant. It is recommended to see the litter, to spend some time with the puppies, and to watch them playing. Pedigrees and other papers should be acquired at no additional expense. Overall, Golden Retrievers are perfect companions and do not require excessive care.
